State officials are trying to determine why a man charged in a wreck that killed five people had a valid Pennsylvania driver's license.

The Division of Motor Vehicles says 32-year-old Brian Stone's West Virginia license was revoked in May 2004 for previous drunken driving convictions.

Steve Dale, assistant to the DMV commissioner, says Stone would have been ineligible for a driver's license in Pennsylvania if he got it after his West Virginia license was revoked. If Stone got the Pennsylvania license before the other license was revoked, West Virginia officials should have been notified.

Stone's home is listed as Gans, Pennsylvania.

Stone is charged with five counts of driving under the influence causing death and one count of third or subsequent offense DUI. Police say his pickup truck rear-ended a car on Interstate 68 near Morgantown, causing it to cross the median and collide head on with another vehicle. The accident occurred Sunday night.
