A large contingent of police officers from Richmond Virginia were in an upstate village Wednesday to bid farewell to one of their one.

Several dozen Richmond officers joined their counterparts from New York law enforcement agencies at a morning funeral in Skaneateles for 32-year-old John Kelly.

The seven-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department grew up in the village near Syracuse before moving to Virginia. He was back in his lakeside hometown for a family reunion when he was killed in a boating accident last weekend.

Kelly and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Heather Wilkins of Richmond, were killed when their boat was struck by another boat on Skaneateles Lake.

The driver of the other boat, 32-year-old Craig Cordes of Syracuse, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and boating while intoxicated.
