The Senate has again passed a measure to allow pari-mutuel style betting on past horse races with some of the proceeds dedicated to transportation.
On a 25-14 vote, the Senate passed Sen. Thomas Norment's bill to allow betting on computerized machines at the state's off-track betting parlors and at Colonial Downs in New Kent County. Bettors would be provided only general information, but no identifying data, on the horses, trainers and jockeys.
Norment's bill has twice been approved by the Senate but died in the House.
This year, Norment directed less to transportation, 42 percent instead of 50 percent of proceeds, so more money could go to tourism, live racing winners, the state racing commission and horse boards and the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.
