Stanley officials say someone dumped about a thousand gallons worth of household waste into the town's septic system. That's a problem since the town's ability to process septic waste is at capacity.
Town officials say before the landfill closed, they could take in a much larger amount of waste. But now that the sludge produced by the septic system has to be hauled to Amelia County, it's simply too expensive and impractical to accept any extra waste.
"We are looking at our future expansion project as being able to putting a holding tank in to take local septic," says Terry Pettit, Stanley's Town Manager.
If town officials are able to track down the illegal dumpers, they could face a fine of up to $2,500.
