A memorial service is scheduled on Thursday for a Richmond police officer killed in a boating crash in upstate New York.

Thirty-two-year-old John Kelly and his 26-year-old girlfriend, Heather Wilkins, were killed when their boat was struck by another boat on Skaneateles Lake on July 8.

A large contingent of police officers from Richmond were in New York last week for Kelly's funeral service.

The seven-year veteran of the Richmond Police Department grew up in the village near Syracuse before moving to Virginia. He was back in his lakeside hometown for a family reunion when he was killed.

The driver of the other boat, 32-year-old Craig Cordes of Syracuse, is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter and boating while intoxicated.
