A lawsuit that is seeking to block James Madison University from cutting ten sports programs is underway.

The school cut seven Men's programs and three Women's programs this summer to comply with Title IX. Now a group called Equity in Athletics is suing the school to try to save the programs.

During Thursday's hearing in Roanoke, a judge did not issue an injunction to save the programs for this year. The full lawsuit is still yet to be decided.

Lawyer Larry Joseph, who represents EIA, says JMU is unfairly cutting sports programs based on quotas.

"Men outnumber women in sports," Joseph said. "They just do. That's not good, that's not bad, that's just the way it is. That shouldn't be held against men, or women. We've got women's teams here that are being cut, along with the men's teams, for no good reason, other than to comply with the quota, which is illegal."

Joseph expects the lawsuit to be decided by Thanksgiving.
