Travelers this holiday weekend who come across an accident may see something unusual and colorful along the road.
But it's not a fireworks display.
Virginia State Police are replacing their roadside flares with "lightsticks."
The state police office in Staunton got its shipment of the sticks this week, but hasn't had to use any yet.
The sticks glow a fluorescent lime-green color for two hours. That's eight times as long as the 15 minutes the old, orange-burning flares lasted.
