A Kanawha County jury has convicted a nurse of injecting her husband with a lethal dose of a paralyzing drug and then setting fire to their home to cover up the crime.
Michelle Michael was found guilty today of first-degree murder and first-degree arson charges stemming from the November 2005 death of James Michael.
But the jury also recommended mercy for the Morgantown nurse practitioner, which leaves her eligible for parole after she serves at least 15 years of a life prison sentence.
Michael appeared composed as Monongalia County Circuit Judge Robert Stone read the verdicts, and then ordered her returned to custody. She will remain in jail until sentencing, which has not yet been set.
The six men and six women spent about 11 hours since Wednesday considering the case against the 35-year-old mother.
Michael injected her husband with a fatal dose of rocuronium, a paralyzing drug, as he lay in bed. She then left for work, returning later that morning to set fire to the bed.
