Therapists at Crossroads Counseling Center in Harrisonburg say the "getting to know each other" stage can prove to be difficult for a reunion like that of Dalton and Jimmy Lucas.
They say the experience can even be traumatic for some, because a child may have grown up knowing a completely different world.
Child and family therapist Greg Czyszczon says, "It's a sense of relief of reunification. Other times it may not be as happy or as much as a joyful crisis. It all depends."
Therapists say bonds can be restored after time.
However, they say it is important for families to get help, whether it be from a therapist or other family members.
