State regulators are seeking information on private water intakes in streams in the area of a proposed shale quarry in Berkeley County.

State regulators are seeking information on private water intakes in streams in the area of a proposed shale quarry in Berkeley County.

The Department of Environmental Protection has scheduled an informal conference on the proposed quarry for April 14 at 7 p.m. at Mountain Ridge Intermediate School in Gerrardstown.

North Mountain Shale LLC is seeking a pollution discharge permit from DEP for the quarry, which would be located on a 100-acre site in Gerrardstown. The quarry would discharge treated water and stormwater into unnamed tributaries of Mill Creek.

A dye-trace study conducted for the Berkeley County Commission showed that groundwater and a well used by the county Public Service Water District are fed by Mill Creek.
