A coalition of groups is continuing to sound the alarm about "huffing," in which people, particularly kids, inhale legal household substances in an attempt to get high, with possibly deadly results.
The National Inhalant Prevention Coalition released a national study Thursday. It warns that more 12 year olds have abused potentially lethal inhalants than have used marijuana, cocaine and hallucinogens combined. Those inhalants can include such things as aerosol sprays, nail polish, gasoline and air conditioner refrigerant.
The coalition is kicking off National Inhalants and Poisons Awareness week with personal stories about the dangers of inhalant use.
One parent emotionally described how his daughter was found dead after "huffing" freon a month before her 18th birthday.
A 17-year-old girl told the news conference she began huffing at age 11; she's now a recovering addict.
