A Harrisonburg native has been named to a 12-year term on the Virginia Supreme Court.

Bill Mims made a name for himself in this area as a student in Harrisonburg public schools.

Retired history and government teacher Henry Buhl remembers Mims as a student at Harrisonburg High School, where Mims played football, track and field, and was an honor student in the early 1970s.

Buhl says he remembers Mims as a humble person.

"Everyone knew he was a sharp fellow. But he didn't flaunt it, he didn't have to. Everyone just knew he was that kind of student. You become successful by not forgetting where you existed earlier. And his grassroots started there at Harrisonburg High School," says Buhl.

Mims spent 11 months as the state Attorney General after Gov. Bob McDonnell stepped down from the position to run for governor.
