A speaker at a Richmond forum on uranium mining in Southside Virginia says the deposit is much smaller than the estimated 119-million pounds stated by its owners.

Environmental analyst Paul Robinson estimated Thursday the deposit at 5 1/2 million pounds, based on his calculations.

But a spokesman for Virginia Uranium Inc. is standing by the 119-million pound estimate and labeled Robinson's estimate "absurd." Patrick Wales said the estimate was based on core and rock samples and chemical analysis.

The forum is sponsored by environmental groups and activists who oppose mining the Pittsylvania County site.

The General Assembly would have to lift a ban that has been in place since 1982.
