Citing McDonnell's Role, Attorneys Ask for Clemency
RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Citing a potential conflict of interest, attorneys for a condemned man are asking Gov. Bob McDonnell to let someone else decide whether next week's execution should go on as scheduled.

Citing a potential conflict of interest, attorneys for a condemned man are asking Gov. Bob McDonnell to let someone else decide whether next week's execution should go on as scheduled.
In their request for clemency, Paul Warner Powell's attorneys argue that McDonnell has a conflict because as attorney general McDonnell helped build the case against their client.
The decision to grant clemency rests exclusively with the governor. McDonnell said Thursday he expects to announce his decision about whether to grant clemency Friday.
He also said he plans to announce a change in the clemency process to try to make it "more fair and just" and give a more timely answer to condemned inmates.
McDonnell declined to reveal details.
