A conservation group has obtained its first easement in West Virginia to protect land in the New River watershed from development.

The conservation easement given to the National Committee for the New River will protect 1,324 acres in Raleigh County. It includes more than six miles of New River tributaries.

Executive Director George Santucci says the easement is the largest ever given to the group. The group now has 37 conservation easements totaling 6,900 acres in North Carolina, Virginia and West Virginia.

Santucci says the property's owner prefers to remain anonymous.

Santucci hopes the gift will encourage other landowners in the region to give easements.
