A former driver for a Fairfax County trucking company has been awarded nearly $600,000 by a jury after spending more than a month in jail because the company claimed he had stolen a trailer.
Driver Eugene Brye Jr. gave notice at Interstate Van Lines in March 2008 that he was resigning in three weeks.
Six days later, Brye was taking his belongings from Interstate's Springfield headquarters to his home in Alabama, when the company president, John D. Morrissette, called him and told him to turn around. When he didn't, Brye was arrested at gunpoint by state troopers in Alabama.
Interstate had told police that Brye was a fired employee and had stolen the trailer. After 34 days in the Macon County jail, he returned to Virginia, where prosecutors dropped the charges.
