Waynesboro Schools have been preparing for the worst, as major budget cuts are made in schools all across the state.

The Waynesboro School Board had to cut $2 million from its budget, which leaves $30 million. That's down seven percent from its last budget of $32.2 million.

Staff reductions are at four percent. Only two staff members will have to be laid off, while 20 other jobs will be lost through early retirement, relocations and non-renewals.

This year, Waynesboro Schools have $1 million less in stimulus money, and will lose another $670,000 in fiscal year 2012.

Waynesboro Schools Superintendent Dr. Robin Crowder says working on this budget has been extremely tough.

Crowder says, "Eighty-two percent of our budget is personnel. So, a lot of people say, 'Gosh how do you spend $30 million?' Well, in schools, it's about people. So when you look and talk about cutting jobs it becomes personal."

Waynesboro School Board members had to meet early Friday because they are required to give the city council their final budget plan by Monday.

Waynesboro schools did not have to cut the Headstart program or require furlough days for employees.
