While some democrats think that after 40 years of Republican candidates dominating the commonwealth, this time around Virginia may be up for grabs.
Experts say the theory is that military personnel will vote against Bush because of the long deployments in Iraq. Local democrats feel that Virginians will perceive Bush as being dishonest about the war and vote for Kerry.
Former democratic mayor Joe Fitzgerald says that normally at this time polls show Virginia already belongs to the Republicans, but not this time around. "Starting off its not as strong as it has been in the past, so with as volatile as a campaign as this has been so far, and will continue to be, there is every reason to believe it could swing just far enough the other way to go for Kerry," says Fitzgerald.
Experts say once the Mason Dixon poll comes out in Virginia, democrats will have a better idea if their theory could become reality.
