STAUNTON, Va. (AP) - A man was charged with felonious vehicle
assault after leading police on a 50-mile chase along Interstate 81
and crashing into a state police vehicle.
Thirty-two-year-old Gordon James Kirk was driving northbound on
I-81 near Buchanan early [Friday] when state trooper Sergeant John
Noel caught him on radar driving 86 miles-per-hour.
Police say Kirk led Noel on a high-speed chase through several counties, then ran into Noel's car south of Staunton as police tried to create a rolling roadblock. Noel was not injured.
Kirk continued to drive at speeds of up to 95 miles-per-hour, passing tractor trailers on the shoulder. Another officer raced ahead and laid down spikes near mile marker 219 in Augusta County, where Kirk was finally stopped.
Kirk was arrested and charged with felonious vehicle assault of an officer, reckless driving and failure to stop, authorities said.
