A local eye doctor put children first Thursday, by giving them free eye exams.

Dr. Mary Lee Pemberton offered free examinations at her Waynesboro office, to any child entering kindergarten. She had 15 appointments.

This was the first year Pemberton offered the free exams, and parents said her generosity makes a difference.

"You always want to know, you always want to be sure that her vision's good, and there's no problem," said Kevin Blackford, who brought his daughter Emma in for an exam. "So it's a good opportunity to take advantage of this."

Pemberton says she often hears from teachers complaining about their students' vision. She says vision problems can often lead to other issues.

"I see so many kids that come into my office all the time that have been diagnosed with ADD, or learning problems, or just don't like to read, get headaches when they read, and just are really down about school," she said.

Also Thursday, nearby Mowen Opticians offered 50 percent off frames, and free lenses to any of Pemberton's young customers who needed glasses.
