Harrisonburg's Court Square is now filled with 1,000 pinwheels to bring attention to the issue of child abuse.

Volunteers came out to help local agencies like Rockingham Memorial Hopsital Childcare Connection, Hand In Hand, Healthy Families and the Collins Center.

They want to get the message out about how to keep kids safe.

This is the first time the groups have planted pinwheels in downtown Harrisonburg.

"Pinwheels are kind of designated as a sign of prevention, as kind of a sign of hope and serenity. So Prevent Child Abuse Virginia, we bought the pinwheels from them, so we're supporting them and also having this community awareness," says Laura Leischner, prevention specialist with the Collins Center.

The pinwheels will be up for a week.

April is recognized a Child Abuse Awareness Month.

WHSV Poll
A committee in the House of Delegates has sent a bill to the House floor that would allow private, faith-based adoption agencies to discriminate against prospective parents based on their sexual orientation. Would you support this?

Yes, I think if it is a private organization it's okay.
No, there should be no discrimination.
It should depend on a case by case basis.
