Even though it's been eight days since the collapse of the Crandall Canyon Mine in Utah, rescuers are still holding out hope that the six trapped miners are still alive.

After all, mine rescues after eight or more days are not unheard of. In 1968, six West Virginia miners were rescued after 10 days.

The miracle of Hominy Falls occurred at a flooded Nicholas County mine owned by the Gauley Coal and Coke Company.

At first 25 miners were trapped after a worker running a continuous mining machine accidentally bored into a wall of water.

The first 15 men were rescued after five days. Rescuers doubted anyone else was alive but continued pumping water until they found another six survivors.

Federal Mine Safety and Health Administration chief Richard Stickler says the Utah miners may have found a good air pocket.
