The fire that broke out in Churchville Friday may have been contained, but not without putting up a fight.

The blaze was so far back in the woods that fire trucks couldn't reach it, but on Saturdayday the Augusta County Volunteer Fire Department may have just received the answer they were hoping for, and it rides on six wheels.

While cars and trucks move when they hear a fire siren, trees and debris will not. Bo Bower, Chief of the Volunteer Fire Station, has just the right answer: an All Terrain Vehicle.

"So there's multiple things on this unit that we can use it for, not just for fighting fire," said Bower. "Basically whatever the task may be we've got some type of way to make a performance for it."

While it may not look too impressive compared to a fire truck, he took it out for a spin and says it is more than useful.

"We can transport in and out whatever needs to be done to make the process a whole lot better for everybody," said Bower.

Though the off road course is close to two miles long, the ATV was able to drive every inch of it.

"Some of the main specs on this unit here is capable of carrying 95 gallons of water," he said. "It has its own five-gallon foam cell that is capable of carrying Class-A foam."

He says that with the amount of people living in the mountains, the ATV is crucial to quick and effective coverage.

"The number one goal we have is to give our community a little comforting feeling that in the event that something happens in the woodlands, that we've got crews available and ready trained to get in and to get them out," said Bower.

This new addition to the Augusta County Fire Station makes three fire ATVs across the Valley.
