Seeking Public Input on VA Uranium Study

Public input is being sought on the scope of a socio-economic study of uranium mining and milling in Virginia.

The Virginia Coal and Energy Commission's Uranium Mining Subcommittee has scheduled a public comment meeting June 22 at Chatham High School in Chatham.

A spokesman for subcommittee chairman Del. Lee Ware says the study will be let for bids after its scope is defined.

Virginia Uranium Inc. seeks to mine and mill a 119-million-pound uranium ore deposit in Pittsylvania County. Before uranium could be mined in Virginia, the General Assembly would have to lift a ban that has been in place since 1982.
