The Union of Concerned Scientists is weighing in on a state investigation into global warming research at the University of Virginia.
More than 800 faculty members at state colleges and universities have signed a letter protesting Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli's investigation.
Cuccinelli's office has asked UVA to provide documents and other materials dating to 1999 involving grant-funded work by former university professor Michael Mann and other faculty.
The AG's office is looking at whether some of that research could have been manipulated to support climate change arguments.
Cuccinelli has questioned if man-made gasses are causing the planet to warm.
He has sued the federal government challenging its authority to regulate greenhouse gas emissions.
