A state energy plan being developed renews prospects of uranium mining in Virginia's Piedmont, a practice that has been barred by a 25-year-old moratorium.

Governor Tim Kaine's administration plans to release the energy plan this month.

A 2006 law directed the department to oversee development of a plan to ensure that the state has adequate and reliable energy sources.

A proposal to mine a uranium deposit near Chatham in the early 1980s generated controversy because of concerns that radioactive milling waste, a result of processing, would pollute the environment.

A mining company had said it discovered 30 million pounds of uranium oxide in Pittsylvania County during searches in the late 1970s and in 1982. The company obtained leases on 40,000 uranium-rich acres in the county and 16,000 acres in Fauquier, Madison, Culpeper and Orange counties.

Wow. This would pump so much money into Virginia's coffers. And think about the jobs it would provide. I hope officials don't sit on this and let it pass by. Mining is so much safer these days, not like it was when the moratorium was put in place. Shoot, that was 25 years ago. What a dinosaur of a law. Nuclear power is safer, cleaner and cheaper than oil or coal. I say mine that stuff today.
