Harrisonburg police have a man in custody who is accused of making a bomb threat at a Wachovia bank on South Main Street Monday morning.
However, police have not yet charged the man with any crimes.
Police say the man entered the bank, claiming to have an explosive device attached to his body.
Several agencies responded, including sharp shooters and the state bomb squad. The man left the bank an hour later, and police say he removed the device.
Police say it was not an explosive.
"Anytime a situation like this happens, we have to take all safety precautions necessary and treat it as if it were an explosive device," says Mary-Hope Vass, the police department's public information officer. "We are still looking into the matter and the motive at this time."
Police are not identifying the man in custody, but several of his neighbors are. They also say this isn't the first time this man has been part of a criminal incident at the bank.
However, neighbors say he was the victim last time.
Neighbors identify the suspect as Dr. Michael E. Smith.
People from several law enforcement agencies searched his home on Rex Road Monday. Harrisonburg police have confirmed that search is related to the bomb threat at the bank.
Amiee Britton spent much of the day watching law enforcement officers swarm the house across the street from her.
She's says she's known Smith for a few years.
"Just in shock. I'm literally in shock. I cannot believe that he would do something like that," says Britton.
Dennis Boffo has lived across from Smith for about two decades.
"Police officers of every size and shape and description [were here]. Your ATF guys and FBI guys and everybody was here," says Boffo.
There are a few things that have Smith's neighbors confused, the first being that Smith works as a doctor.
According to Rockingham Memorial Hospital's Website, he works for the hospital in radiology.
"If you asked me yesterday, 'Would Mike ever rob a bank?' I would have said, 'No.' He'd have no reason to," says Boffo.
According to police, it's unclear whether that was even the man's intention.
"I was in shock. I couldn't believe it. I really honestly thought that someone had done it to him because I've known him for a long time," says Britton.
According to a few neighbors, Smith told them he was the victim of an armed robbery in late 2006.
An article in the "Daily News-Record" reports that police say a man on Rex Road was abducted by a masked man and forced to drive to a nearby ATM to get money.
Neighbors say that ATM was at the same bank involved in Monday's alleged bomb threat.
Boffo says Smith is a nice guy and he says this case just doesn't make sense.
"It doesn't. It really doesn't. As a neighbor, [he's] a great guy to have as a neighbor," says Boffo.
"You never know who you're going to live next to. You could be living next to a serial killer and not know it," says Britton.
Harrisonburg Police Lt. Kurt Boshart confirms "a number of people were detained in connection with the investigation."
He says only one person remains in custody, that being the suspect in the alleged bomb threat. He says some people were questioned and let go.

Unbelievable, wow, I'm at a loss for words. How about "no comment" or don't even say anything to the press. You OBVIOUSLY didn't no anything about what happened as it is now finally coming out in the press. Did any of the nosey neighbors see strangers or a strange car that morning, think about it and cooperate with the police...NOT THE PRESS! What a horrible ordeal for him. It could have happened to any one of you in the neighborhood. The outcome could have been really tragic.
Harry Perhaps this investigation is in the early stages. And your inability to spell does not help promote your ideas.
wow. way to go neighbors. If you know this isn't the type of person he is...which all that know him knows he would never do this on his own will...how dare u even make a report to the media. you should be ashamed. No comment would have went a long way. its all about respect. wow! I'm so ready for the truth to come out so dignity could be restored to dr. smith.
