The Obama administration has added a U.S.-born, al-Qaida-linked cleric to a terrorism blacklist.
Anwar al-Awlaki is thought to be hiding in Yemen. While American officials do not see him as a major tactical terror leader on par with Osama bin Laden, he is believed to have played a role instigating a number of recent attacks.
Al-Awlaki is accused of inspiring the Times Square bombing attempt in May and is alleged to have been involved in the plot to bring down a U.S. airliner bound for Detroit on Christmas Day. He's also believed to have exchanged e-mails with the Army psychiatrist charged with killing 13 people in last November's Fort Hood shootings.
Treasury officials say the cleric has had an operational role in aiding al-Qaida's growing faction in Yemen.
The Specially Designated Global Terrorists list targets al-Awlaki with sanctions, including freezing his assets and barring Americans from him money. It also bans him from traveling to the United States.
