A motorcyclist led Virginia State Police on a high-speed chase through several towns and across two counties Sunday afternoon.

As part of Operation Air, Land and Speed state police were out in full force throughout the weekend.

However, when a trooper tried to stop an orange motorcycle that was clocked at 98 miles per hour on Route 11 near Weyers Cave, an hour-long chase began.

Trooper Timothy Simmons describes the suspect as a skinny, white man wearing an orange tank top and colorful shorts. He says the man may be wanted on another charge as well.

After the initial attempted stop, police followed the suspect through Mount Crawford where he turned on Airport road.

The suspect then made his way to Route 42 towards Bridgewater where police had a rolling roadblock waiting.

However, the motorcyclist went around troopers, crossing into oncoming traffic and driving more than 100 miles per hour.

The suspect took some backroads near Turner Ashby High School and ended up on Route 649, where police lost him.

Several people witnessed the chase, some who say they recognize the bike and are watching the roads.

"So, I'm definitely keeping a lookout because it's not safe, and things like that should definitely be stopped. So, I know that if I see him in this area ever again that I will definitely give them a call and let them know where he is," says Laura Ludholtz who witnessed part of the chase.

State police say public safety is one reason they were unable to chase down the motorcycle. They say high-speed chases often endanger innocent people.
