Dominion Power is working on a plan they say will help Valley residents save on their utility bills. The company recently filed an application to promote several energy-saving strategies.

Wasted energy can come from many areas in your home.

Dominion spokesperson David Botkins says, "Weather stripping is something that could be used around doorways or windows. Replacing a shower head that's currently not energy efficient with one that uses less water, and requires less energy on the part of the water heater."

Dominion power is one of the nation's largest producers of energy, and the company has been keeping it's eye on ways to conserve that energy. One of which is an energy audit.

"A third party vendor will randomly contact customers as part of the free energy audit program, and literally go room to room in an individual's house to point out where energy efficiencies can be implemented, or in some cases, to tell the customer what they're doing right," says Botkins.

Some of the easiest advice is simply knowing which light bulb to purchase. Switching to compact fluorescent bulbs is a small step with a big impact.

"The one thing about the energy efficient bulbs is that they last forever. They're guaranteed to last ten years. They use less power, so you save your money on your electricity bills," says Scott Lanier, an electrical department store supervisor.

And Botkins says, "They have to decide if they want to swap out their shower head. Do they want to put the weather stripping in. Do they want to have a programmable thermostat that will calibrate the temperature in their house for them."
