Virginia Commonwealth University officials are pleased overall with testing of emergency warning sirens on both campuses in Richmond.
The sirens were tested Wednesday at noon. They're part of security measures that were put in place after the mass shootings at Virginia Tech in April.
VCU spokeswoman Pam Lepley said school officials got numerous reports that the 130-decibel sirens were not loud enough. She says school officials are looking at how to make them louder. One possibility would be adding more sirens.
The sirens are mounted atop Cabell Library at Monroe Park and the Wood Building on the MCV campus. They sounded for one minute at noon, with a shorter blast later. The shorter blast would signal all clear in the case of an emergency.
Besides the siren blasts, the test involved sending alerts via text messaging, school computer screens, e-mails, VCU's Web site and TV-like digital screens in campus buildings.
A major goal of the test was to encourage people to sign up for the text messages. Only about 11,000 of the 50,000 students, faculty and staff have signed up.
