The street name is Spice, and it looks and even smells like marijuana.
In fact, Augusta County Investigator Brian Jenkins says it can give you the same high.
Spice is sold as incense. Jenkins says it's available at many convenience stores, and it's perfectly legal if you're over 18 years old.
He says, "As people look to new things to get them high, they look for new products and things to do it. Occasionally these things come up. The packaging reads, 'For aroma therapy only, not to be consumed by humans.' But that is what is happening."
Diane Kellog at the Office on Youth says local kids are already hearing about Spice on the streets.
She says, "We try to be aware of what the latest trends are. We look to law enforcement and other agencies to assist."
Kellog hopes their outreach can keep the product from getting into the hands of young people.
"If we are not sure what they are doing, we don't know how to prevent it or intervene with it," adds Kellog.
Aside from area children, Jenkins says the drug can pose a serious threat to adults.
He says, "Anything that can make you high or alter your consciousness can be dangerous."
While less common, investigators also say there are particular bath salts sold in some stores that can produce effects similar to cocaine.

What studies would anonymous be referring to? Don't you read the package - it is incense and the package clearly says, NOT FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION! Guess you aren't that law abiding. If Spice were so safe, why is it banned in most European countries????
GOD BLESS ALL OF OUR POLICE MEN AND KEEP THEM SAFE WHILE DOING THERE JOB. WE ARE LIVING A SICK WORLD NOW!!
Studies have shown that 3 grams of Spice is about as dangerous as a pack of cigarettes. It does not smell or look like marijuana whatsoever. It produces effects less mind altering than alcohol, generally euphoric with less potency than marijuana. Effects generally last from 20 to 40 minutes. I am a law abiding citizen, and I smoke spice daily. Spice is not in the same category as Salvia, so the need for prohibition is useless, unless you want to prohibit the consumption of alcohol as well. The police really need to focus on the local drinking problem more than this. Stop promoting the "Reefer Madness" further. These alternatives, as well as Marijuana are significantly less harmful than alcohol.
