Michigan is the latest state to be dealing with a major oil spill.

The Environmental Protection Agency estimates more than one million gallons have leaked from a pipeline into the Kalamazoo River.

Gov. Jennifer Granholm warns that the incident could turn into a "tragedy of historic proportions" if the oil reaches Lake Michigan, 80 miles downstream.

It's already killed fish and coated other wildlife along at least 35 miles of river. It's stretching toward Morrow Lake, upstream from the city of Kalamazoo, and one state emergency official says the oil may have spread beyond a dam at the lake.

Granholm has called the response by the EPA and Enbridge Energy, the company that owns the pipeline, "wholly inadequate." She's calling on the federal government for more help.

Workers and contractors have been using vacuum trucks and absorbent booms to contain and clean the spill, and Enbridge says it's bringing in more help.

Meanwhile, there's word that government regulators warned Enbridge earlier this year that its monitoring of corrosion in the pipeline was insufficient. The company has not commented on that report.
