Administration Gives Up Push to Try 9/11 Mastermind in Civilian Court

The Obama administration has given up its bid to try September 11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in civilian court, a move that leaves plans to close Guantanamo Bay hanging by a thread.

President Barack Obama once vowed to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects and move its remaining detainees. But he has been unable to fulfill that promise.

Mohammed and other detainees are now being held at Guantanamo, and that's where a military commission trial for Mohammed and his four alleged co-conspirators would probably be conducted.

Likely Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney is praising the Obama administration's decision.

Romney said in a statement Monday that he hopes "inexperienced and naïve" President Barack Obama changes course on other policies, too.

Romney, a former governor of Massachusetts, is expected to enter the GOP primary in the coming weeks to challenge Obama in 2012.

Congress has passed legislation that blocked any detainees at Guantanamo Bay from coming to the United States.
