WASHINGTON (AP) — The 26-year-old woman is the third American known to have been kidnapped by the militant group. She was captured last year. Representatives of the family and U.S. officials asked that she not be identified out of fear for her safety.

More than a week ago, an American freelance journalist -- James Foley -- was beheaded by the group, which had kidnapped him in November of 2012. A video of his beheading showed another missing American journalist, Steven Sotloff, and warned that he would be killed next if U.S. airstrikes continue against militants in northern Iraq.

President Barack Obama today said in a speech in North Carolina that "America does not forget." And he vowed justice for Foley's murder.

Other American hostages have been held by other militant groups, including Peter Curtis, from Boston, who was recently released by al-Nusra Front. Another U.S. freelance journalist, Austin Tice of Houston, disappeared in Syria in August of 2012. He's believed to be held by the same organization.
