HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- Harrisonburg City School students are enjoying their first day of summer vacation.

School let out early Friday to wrap up the year. At Skyline Middle School, the day was full of emotion.

The students got out at about 12:30 Friday afternoon. On a day where many students across the area look forward to boarding the buses and heading home for the summer, these kids actually have a hard time leaving.

Many teared up as the buses pulled up. Students and teachers say it's the school's culture of community that makes them want to stay.

"All of us are close. All of us eighth graders are really close with each other. Some of us are moving, and we're not going to be able to see each other, so it's kind of sad," shared eighth grader, Danializ Chabrier.

"It's a celebration day, but it's also a really sad day, because kids are going to miss us over the summer, and we're going to miss them," added sixth grade teacher, April Detamore.

The school year begins again in Harrisonburg on August 19.
