WAYNESBORO -- The old schoolhouse in Waynesboro is owned by the city and has many code violations. The schoolhouse or the Arnold House hasn't been touched for more than 50 years. Waynesboro Mayor Bruce Allen said the time to decide is now.

"I don't think anybody wants to tear the house down. But it's time that we need to take action," said Allen.

The Arnold House was the first school house in Waynesboro and has been standing since the mid 1800's. David Geiger is the chairman of the Waynesboro Historic Commission. He doesn't want to see the building go.

"I think it would be a travesty to have a historic property of Waynesboro history to be torn down," said Geiger.

Waynesboro City Council has determined that it would cost the city $35,000 to demolish or bring the Arnold House up to code. That's money the city isn't sure it wants to spend.

"I'm just not willing to to suggest putting any of these amounts of money into a building or structure that we haven't taken care of," said Waynesboro Councilman Jeff Freeman.

The council is thinking about selling the land. Geiger would like to see something else.

"Bring the building up to code and then ultimately preserve the property for repurpose use," said Geiger.

The council decided to let the city manager repair parts of the old school house but isn't allowed to spend more than $10,000. Waynesboro City Council will vote August 12 to either keep the house or demolish it.
