VERONA, Va.--- Augusta County Sheriff's Office Investigator Paul McCormick said one man is at the hospital after being shot on Saturday morning.
McCormick said the shooting took place on the 200 block of Westgate road. Deputies responded to the house after 7 a.m. This is where they found a man with a gun shot wound who was later flown to the UVa Medical Center. As of 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, the victim was having an emergency surgery.
The name of the victim has not been released.
The Sheriff's Office arrested 35-year-old Jerome Jones. He faces charges for attempted murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and possession of a firearm by a violent convicted felon. On Saturday, he was at the Middle River Regional Jail.
Investigators searched the home and found a gun inside. They did not confirm it was the one used in the shooting.
Neighbor Stephen Crist who has younger children said he is surprised it happened so close to home.
" I am concerned and worried. I moved my family from Newport News to a town that I thought was small and safe. It is scary to have something like this happen in this area," said Crist.
The case is still under investigation. The Sheriff's Office said it appears to be an isolated incident and there appears to be no threat to the public.
