HARRISONBURG,Va. (WHSV)-- "That kind of shocked me because it's something that not really happens around here," said Gustabo Tronco.
Tronco lives right down the road from the Autozone on North Mason Street in Harrisonburg. He's surprised to hear the store he passes by so many times was just robbed.
"Sometimes you can leave your house unlocked and nothing will happen, but when you hear something like that, it's kind of scary," said Tronco.
According to police, a tall, skinny male wearing a black ski-mask, light colored jeans, and a camouflage sweatshirt that was pulled over his head, walked into the store just before 10 p.m. on the night of July 13. He took an undisclosed amount of money then fled the scene.
Lucy Hawkins and her daughter live right next door to the store and hears of robberies in the area a lot. She thinks the area has a loitering issue.
"The ones that hang out there at night especially, they know the routine of the employees at Autozone. So they're going to know when somebody's there and somebody's not," said Hawkins.
Because of that, she thinks people should be more vigilant for suspicious activity at night.
"If people would pay more attention to stuff going on and look around them and watch out for their neighbors and their friends and their families, this wouldn't keep happening," said Hawkins.
Ellie Shifflett is her neighbor and thinks the robbery is connected with area's drug problem.
"If we clean up the neighborhood as far as drugs, there would be no problems around here, but people right now are hard up on money and will do anything to get money for drugs."
Either way, Tronco is sure the police will find their guy.
"I know they're going to find the guy or guys who did it," said Tronco.
Police are still investigating the robbery and ask anyone with information to contact the Harrisonburg Police Department at 540-434-4436.
