Bayer Buys Part of Merck

ELKTON, Va. (WHSV) -- U.S. Drug Maker Merck is selling off part of its company to German drug maker Bayer.

The deal, which is for more than $14 billion, was announced Tuesday and will see Bayer take over Merck's consumer care business.

No word yet if any workers or facilities will be eliminated.

Karen Kopera, who works at Terri's Country Cafe in Elkton, said it would hurt if Elkton lost an employer like Merck, "It brings business here. Elkton's a very small town and we can use all the business we can get. Not just us, any business here in town."

Kopera said she personally knows people that work at Merck and wishes them the best.
