HARRISONBURG - For the past month, WHSV Daybreak Anchor Tom Dempsey has been participating in food challenges across the Valley.
The point is for Tom to partake in local challenges and for local restaurants to show off their specialties.
This week's series kicks off with Jack Brown's Beer and Burger Joint in Harrisonburg.
As it's name suggests, Jack Brown's menu is very simple. They specialize in burgers and beer. Aaron Ludwig, the owner of Jack Brown's, says it's the burgers and the environment that make Jack Brown's so special.
"It's Wagu beef. It's a very rare sort of meat. It's about a quarter pound patty we use. It's very much like an old diner style," said Aaron Ludwig.
Jack Brown's uses different toppings to make their burgers stand out.
"This is where store all of our fun toppings. Everything from peanut butter to mac and cheese. Always changing."
For this challenge, Tom had to beat the record of nine cheeseburgers in one sitting. That record is held by Austin Brown. To make it on the wall of fame, Tom had to eat ten.
With people cheering, some even with signs, Tom sat down to start the challenge.
The first three went down without a problem. He says condiments like ketchup, mustard and hot sauce helped the most.
"You want to differentiate the tastes of the burger,” said Tom.
On the fourth burger, he started to hit a wall. The sight of the burger was making him sick.
The sixth burger would be his downfall.
Amid cheers from the crowd and one more bite left, he couldn't go any further.
While he didn't beat this challenge, there are four more left. Tune into Daybreak every day this week to see if Tom tackles any of the remaining challenges.
