HARRISONBURG, Va.-- Downtown businesses stayed busy with the Block Party of the Burg on Saturday.

An event that gives the James Madison University Freshmen and transfer students a snapshot of what the city has to offer.

JMU president Jonathan Alger led a crowd of students from the campus to downtown. He said the festival allows the community and students to celebrate a new school year.

During the event, students can explore businesses just minutes away from campus. In addition, they can also learn more from services in the area from the Harrisonburg Police Department and Harrisonburg Fire Department.

"I think it's really important for the university to emphasize that we are not the isolated ivory tower, that we want to be good neighbors, that we want our students to understand, know and participate in the community of which we are a part," said Alger.

He said it is important for him to participate and meet students.
