The new trend of 4G technology is on its way to the Valley. Wednesday, the Rockingham County board of supervisors approved a request by a company out of Atlanta to build a new cell phone tower in the county.

Tucked away at the Massanetta Springs Camp and Conference Center about 1,000 Massanetta Springs Road is a cell phone tower.
Right next to it, will soon be an identical one, nearly 100 feet high.

"None of our bedrooms have a telephone, so the cell coverage is the way they keep in communication with their families back at home." said Fred Holbrook, the executive director at the camp. He said the new tower will give his guests access to the outside world.

The new cell phone tower will have a three mile radius. That's enough to cover new houses in the area, the camp, its neighbors and more.

"Those travelling on route 33, tourists to the area, small business owners. It will truly increase the amount of coverage." said Valerie Long, legal council for CIG Wireless, the group wanting to build the tower. She gave a presentation at the Rockingham County Board of Supervisors meeting Wednesday night.

The board approved the request to build the tower. The company will pay $10,000 a year to lease the land the tower will sit on. That lease is for at least five years. The tower company has to get a county building permit. It should take three weeks to build the tower.
