VERONA -- The Boy Scouts at the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank on Saturday have big dreams. And they did their best to help them come true, especially for hungry families all across the Valley.

"Times are quite lean. Many people don't really know where their next meal is coming from. So the food bank helps a lot with that," said Michael Koch of Troop 30. "As scouts it's quite important to help those in need."

Troops spent the morning going door-to-door, scouting for food that neighbors left for them to get. And they got a lot - all of which will go to help feed hungry families.

"Going into the holiday season, I'm sure a lot of those families hope to put a nice holiday meal on the table," said Ruth Jones with the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. "And for some of them, it's not a possibility without the support of the people in the community."

This food drive typically provides 80,000 meals, Jones said, helping feed hungry people at a time they need it the most.

"They know they're going to put nice, warm, good quality food, good nutrition into their body and into their children's bodies if they have children," said Kevin Harner, with the Stonewall Jackson Area Council.

But needy families are not the only ones getting something out of the deal. The Boy Scouts learned that some things are in their power to change.

"It shows that you don't always have to ignore stuff," said Casey Harner of Troop 30. "It shows that you can just do some small things and it'll make everything a lot better."

Jones said 35,000 people in the Valley need help with food each month. And while the number goes up in the winter, she said it is not just a seasonal problem. is happy to provide a forum for commenting and discussion. Please respect and abide by the house rules:
