Brewery Set To Open In Staunton

As you get your game day supplies together, the right beer is an important decision.

Come this time next year, you're going to have an even harder time deciding. A Staunton man is in the process of opening a new brewery right in the city's downtown.

The founder of Redbeard Brewing, said he wants nothing more than to give people good, simple solid beer. He said the craft industry is all over the place with experimentation these days; they're not focusing on the core product.

Jonathan Wright assured us he plans on being the exception to that trend. He has been home brewing for the past five years. He's been working on getting three flagship brews perfected, an American pale ale, an English brown ale, and an American stout.

Now he's ready to let more people try them.

"I've been spending that time developing these recipes so that when I did open, I knew I had solid product to give to the public and I wasn't trying to sort things out and using them as guinea pigs," said Wright.

With help from the Staunton Creative Community Fund Wright was able to secure a prime location in Staunton's downtown. He's in the process of getting licensing to open Redbeard Brewing, complete with taproom.

Neighbors are already getting excited.

You know, just the fact that actually somebody is making beer, you know," said Tony Doggett, who lives above the brewery. "I've heard of it. I've had friend that's have done it. They live so far away I've never had the opportunity to try it. It will be something worth trying."

"This is the type of business that both the residents of Staunton would like to see happen, as well as the government, because it's going to bring in tourism dollars," said Wright.

Wright says that he is expecting the go ahead from the Federal Government any day. In the meantime, he's trying to get the brew house built by the end of Winter. He even set up a Kickstarter for beer lovers interested in pitching in.

A football fan, Wright is counting on many of those beer lovers joining him next season.

"The taproom will probably be open for every Redskins game, as well as the normal hours," he said. "I'll probably come in here and open up about an hour before kickoff and if we lose it will be a couple minutes after the game that we'll close up, if we win, it will probably be a couple of hours."

Wright said if he is unsuccessful in getting licensed, he will try again.
