BRIDGEWATER, Va -- The Virginia Department of Transportation started a project on the Route 11 northbound bridge over Cooks Creek. The project includes a deck, handrails, curbs, floor system and other bridge parts.

The location on Route 11 is just north of the intersection with Route 257 near Bridgewater. Traffic will be reduced to a single 12-foot lane with a 14-foot clear width between the barrier.

Phil Davis has been driving over this bridge since 1959 and he is understanding of the repairs.

"The bridge is old,” said Davis. “It has to be repaired. You're going to have to close down a lane somewhere. People just need to have a little patience. It's not going to get fixed overnight. If you're in that big a hurry, just go down 42 and go around like that."

The bridge is estimated to be finished in late December.
