STAUNTON, Va -- Eva Garber, a school bus driver, has driven children to and from school for 33 years. She has seen people drive right by a stopped bus and that could put children in danger.

“It's scary sometimes, because especially bus drivers that have children crossing the road, that is a big issue with us if a driver has not stopped,” said Garber.

Bus drivers say they have seen more people disobey the law this fall than in years past. Staunton's police department does have officers near schools.

Crossing guards, like Nelson Hampton, pay attention to traffic and help students stay safe.

“Sometimes you get a little bit put out with it, but there's only so much you can do,” said Hampton. “Of course, the police can't be here all the time to help you, so you just have to do the best you can do.”

Hampton said some drivers also drive faster than the speed limit, especially during posted school hours.

Bus drivers use several mirrors on their routes during the morning and afternoon, but they only help so much. That is where driving safely comes in.

Garber says it is up to bus drivers, pedestrians and people in cars to keep students safe. She considers these students to be like her own children.

“These school buses carry the most precious cargo in the world, and we need everybody's help to make it safer for them,” said Garber. “It's a cargo that we can never replace. Please be safe out there.”

Passing a school bus that is loading or unloading children could come with a reckless driving charge in Virginia. That means it could add points to your license.
