Cab Companies Requesting More Rate Clarity

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- You may notice a difference in your rate when you hop into a taxi cab soon, depending on what the Harrisonburg City Council decides on Tuesday night.

Currently, although the fuel charge is not an added fee, cab workers say the way it's tallied can be confusing.

Local cab companies are asking that the fuel charge be added initially rather than at the end of the trip.

Right now, when customers get in a cab, they see the cab driver press the button for time, starting at $2.75, but then after the ride is done, they see the extra. The problem is that right now not everyone is really clear on what that means.

"That leads to confusion, the passengers don't understand it, so what this does tonight, is to add the 75 cents to the $2.75 to make it more transparent," said Clo Rodeffer, the operations manager at Yellow Cab.

On Tuesday night, the city council will review the request to permanently add the fuel charge to taxi meters.

A letter by five cab companies shows that workers say some drivers avoid adding on the gas charge because customers complain.

That means the rates aren't consistent and if council votes to approve the change, each company would have to adjust its meters.

Rodeffer said drivers haven't seen an increase in fares in years. This isn't one, but she's hopeful the change will help make rates clear for customers.

"It really hits the pocket of these drivers and this is their livelihood, they're trying to make a living off of this," said Rodeffer.

Just to be clear, the companies tell me that this won't be an increased rate of any sort. That fuel charge has been in place for years.
