HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- The Red Flag Campaign aims to raise awareness about dating violence on college campuses like James Madison University.
The campaign wants students to recognize signs beyond physical violence, such as isolation, coercion and jealousy.
Throughout the week, events will highlight the importance of taking a stand against violence.
The campaign's website states 1 in 5 relationships on college campuses are abusive.
Liz Howley, the assistant director of student wellness and outreach, said the week focuses on awareness.
Students may have trouble recognizing the signs of an unhealthy relationship.
As part of the campaign, students had a variety of red desserts Monday and will also see the red flags throughout the week.
"It's all about recognizing them, but also about not being a bystander and about saying something. So a big part of the campaign is if you see something, say something," said Howley.
Students will wear red for awareness on Wednesday, and on Friday, students can also pledge to intervene if they witness abuse.
