ROCKINGHAM CO., Va. (WHSV) There are five candidates from two districts competing for seats on the Rockingham County School Board.
Two from District One:
(1) LaDonna Shiflet
(2) Richard Fulk
(1) Dave Briggman
(2) Jim Elmore
(3) Renee Reed
The candidates answered tough questions, concerning their thoughts on the future of the school system. School shootings are a concern for one candidate.
"We're going to have to address mental health issues. Locking all the doors is only part of the answer," said Ladonna Shiflet, who is a candidate from District 1.
Another issue is overcrowding, it's something candidate for District 3 Renee Reed wants to address.
"Some that are below capacity and eventually we may need to take a look at that capacity and the enrollment in our schools," said Reed.
Dave Briggman said he is concerned about the school system's policy on transgendered students.
"A policy that permits, it must specifically permit boys to use the bathrooms, the showers," said Briggman, who is a candidate for District 3.
"Neither in the policy or in the direction given by the administrators to teachers is there any direction requiring rules around different gender children using different bathrooms," said Jim Elmore, who is also a candidate for District 3. He maintains that Briggman's claims are false.
"Quoting Patrick Moynihan. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but not their own facts," said Dan Breeden who is a District 5 school board member.
If you want to vote absentee in person, Saturday is your last day to do so.
